Sperry 1899 Electric car – Gordon Bennett Rally 18 Jun 2005
18-06-2005
NiBS Ltd has taken up the challenge to build an alternative battery pack (currently 2 x 48V automotive sets) to give the oldest electric car, originally built in Ireland in 1899 (and regularly entered in the London to Brighton Veteran Car Run), greater distance and faster change over of its battery pack without aesthetically changing the car.
The car was collected on 2 June for onward transport to Ireland. It took part in the 2005 Mercedes-Benz International Gordon Bennett Rally on Saturday 18 June organised by the Irish Veteran and Vintage Car Club Limited. For the Sperry Electric car which was entered in Class A (Antique cars built before 01/01/1905) the route consisted of a mixture of free driving and timed regularity sections which are the basis of the competition, all based around The Curragh, Co Kildare.
We are pleased to announce that the car came first in its class (out of four), one of our NiBS Ltd vehicles providing backup for battery changes and a good time was had by all. The next event is the London to Brighton run in early November.
