Sperry 1899 Electric car - London to Brighton Run 6 Nov 2005
06-11-2005
The car was entered in the RAC London to Brighton Veteran Car Run 2005 on 5/6 November 2005, with over 500 pre-1905 cars attempting the 60 mile route from Hyde Park in Central London to Madeira Drive in Brighton. NiBS Ltd were providing tender support vehicles for the 1899 Cleveland Sperry electric car.
The event started for NiBS Ltd with the International Concours on Regent Street on Saturday when the cars are displayed, judged and demonstrated to the public. The Sperry car won The Spectators Special Award for the Veteran Car of the Day as voted, on the day, by the visiting public (sponsored by Michelin Tyres). On Sunday it was an early start, the Sperry being one of the older cars with a low entry of number 43 in Sector 2, the planned start time was 7.23 am.
The car ran well with battery changes south of Crawley and Pyecombe, with tow periods at Redhill, Cuckfield and Clayton (allowed) and finishing in appalling weather, driving headwinds and heavy rain, at approximately 2.45 pm.
